Project Name: Hinterland Poultry ‘Egg Sandwich’ Project Phase I
Partner: The Consultancy Group (TCG)
Implementing Agency: Rupununi Livestock Producers Association (RLPA)
GGI Priority Area: Economic Diversification – Agriculture
Target Beneficiaries: Hinterland poultry producers and consumers in region 9
Region: 9
Duration: 13 Months
Purpose: The Egg Sandwich project aims to enable consumer access to affordable, high-quality local chicken and eggs in Guyana’s hinterland regions (1, 7, 8, and 9) by strengthening the capacity of hinterland poultry producers and the RLPA. Safeguards are also being introduced to ensure that health, safety, social, and environmental sustainability underpin the transformation of poultry production in the hinterland.
Outputs:
Since its implementation, the Hinterland Poultry ‘Egg Sandwich’ Project Phase I has sought to:
- Provide Rupununi poultry producers and households with 700 broilers, layers or dual-purpose chicks per week.
- Train 900 current and new poultry producers across region 9 in poultry production and enterprise management.
- Provide 90% of the region’s population with access to poultry inputs (chicks, feed, basic equipment), training and technical advice within a one-hour drive from their residence.
- See that 40% of all poultry producers and 60% of commercial producers implement RLPA’s Quality and Sustainability Safeguards Framework (developed with support from this project).
- See that 75% of non-urban households in region 9 are engaged in poultry production (for subsistence or semi-commercial purposes)
Anticipated Impacts:
- 600 current and new poultry producers (households, semi-commercial, and commercial) from hinterland regions (1, 7, 8 and 9) trained in poultry production, poultry enterprise management, and quality standards.
- 80% of hinterland households report that eggs and poultry meat are more easily available, of better quality, and that local chicken and eggs are their preferred choice.
