The Greater Guyana Initiative is a US$100 million (GY$20 billion) investment made by the Stabroek Block co-venturers ExxonMobil Guyana Limited, Hess Guyana Exploration Limited and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited, which will support capacity development programs across Guyana over ten years. This represents a significant expansion of ongoing capacity-building efforts in the country and demonstrates a long-term commitment by the Stabroek Block co-venturers to help further development in Guyana.
With a focus on education and training, economic development, and health, the initiative aims to strengthen the Guyanese workforce, increase the competitiveness of local businesses across sectors and lay the foundation necessary for a thriving business environment and sustained economic growth.
As programs develop, national and local leaders, community members and the private sector will be engaged to bolster the effectiveness of the endeavor and ensure alignment with Guyana’s development priorities as they evolve over the coming years.
The Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) multi-faceted approach focuses on education and training, economic development, and health.
The GGI education and training programs will focus on advancing diverse vocational and university education, building skills, and developing competencies to support growing opportunities across many economic sectors.
This objective will be achieved through collaboration with education sector stakeholders such as the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET) and the University of Guyana. The capacity-building initiatives will focus on developing a technical workforce for the broader economy. Funding will advance programs for select craft skills and basic industrial safety training including mechanics, electrical installation, and welding. Under the initiative, persons are also provided with Basic Industrial and Safety Training.
The GGI will focus on public health initiatives that increase access to treatment and education. In keeping with this goal, one initiative has been a partnership with the Roraima Learning Trust (RLT) under the Enhancing Community Wellness Project to reduce the prevalence of chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension in the country.
The GGI will expand the co-venturers’ current support for the Centre for Local Business Development (CLBD) and facilitate its transition into a long-term center of excellence for the broader industry.
In addition to expanding the Centre, programs will focus on regional initiatives in capacity development, in priority areas such as business development and agriculture.
